It’s time for another review, and this one is based on the true story of a dog named Dozer. Dozer debuts in the new picture book by author Debbie Levy: Dozer’s Run: A True Story of a Dog and His Race.
Dozer is a Goldendoodle – a cross between a golden retriever and a poodle – and he lives in Highland, Maryland and sleeps in a barn. He has a wonderful people family, a dog friend named Chica, and plenty to see and do in his farm yard. One of the things he does is roam with his friend Chica and sniff the interesting odors that the foxes, toads, squirrels and raccoons leave in the grass and trees.
One day, Dozer sees one person and then another run past his yard! Curious Dozer doesn’t know that they are running a special race for the Greenebaum Cancer Center of the University of Maryland; he only knows they’re running.
So, Dozer slips out of the yard and follows the runners, making a game of out-sprinting everyone. No one can catch him and no one can slurp water like him. It’s all a fun game until he grows tired and hungry and decides he no longer wants to be a leader. He almost turns back, until he discovers that the runners actually like him! They are tiring out and starting to slow down, and they need Dozer to inspire them to keep running.
Dozer’s Run is an inspirational story of a dog that ran a race for cancer and the people he inspired. Readers will love the adorable pictures and the chance to experience the race from a dog’s perspective. They will also learn how Dozer’s inspirational run raised a total of $25,000 for cancer and won him the title of Top Dog of the Maryland Half-Marathon race.
This book would do well as an early elementary reader, or in a hospital or doctor’s office that serves cancer patients or their families. It gets the Picture Book Depot WOW factor rating of 5.
