There are many beautifully-illustrated, wonderfully-penned picture books out there with African American, Asian, Hispanic, Italian and other ethnicities as the main characters. The problem is, they are not always so easy to find.
In this amazing melting-pot that we call earth, modern society is striving to do away with labels–and rightly so. That being said, it should be noted that Picture Book Depot is not attempting to reverse social progress by re-labeling picture book characters.
Our intentions are simple. As book-lovers from diverse backgrounds, we know first-hand (through family and friends and the young ones they read to) that sooner or later, children like to read stories about characters that look like them.
Thus, our “Multicultural” mini-site. We desire to take the work out of searching for and finding great multicultural titles. If an Asian-American wants to find a book with Asian MC’s, we want to make it easier to do so. If a Bi-racial child wants to discover how other Bi-racial families look and interact, we want to make it easier to find books with those characters.
And so, here we are. With a few clicks, readers can find their favorites, and can be on their way to building a wonderful multicultural library for their children.
