Hi Everybody!
Well, it finally happened! One of my picture books has finally found a home. By the way, this is a picture of me cheesing for the camera as I sit at my antique Underwood typewriter. Forgive the scratches on the desk…it’s antique too, and it hasn’t been refinished.
Here’s the story: On December 20, 2012, I got a telephone call from Lee and Low Publishers, telling me that I have been chosen as their 2012 New Voices Awards Winner. Here’s the link to their article:
My story is called “Uncle Billy’s Family Reunion,” and it’s the true story of an enslaved African American man working in Chattanooga, Tennessee (my hometown!) in the 1800’s.
I wrote a more detailed post about my win; how I screamed and tossed Fritos corn chips all over the place in my unbridled glee.

I’m so thrilled to have won, and I’m looking forward to the day when my own historical picture book can join the ranks with the books I feature here.
I hope you’ll celebrate with me.
Best wishes and happy writing,
Rita Lorraine
