Oh, What a Christmas!
I have just finished Oh, What a Christmas, by author/illustrator Michael Garland, and oh, what beautiful illustrations!
Oh what a Christmas gives a new twist to a beloved Christmas story for young children. It’s Christmas eve, and Santa is anxiously expected at every home around the world. But as he heads out with his eight reindeer to do the job, the sleigh comes apart.
The reindeer go off in one direction, while Santa and the sleigh go in another direction and land in a barnyard. The barnyard animals are as surprised as Santa, and all of them – pigs, cows, horses, goats and a dog – hurry out of the barn to see this sight.
Santa is in a pickle and must find a solution, or boys and girls everywhere will be disappointed. He must use his wits and take what’s available to save Christmas, so he uses a little magic to get the job done.
In this beautifully illustrated book, the whimsical illustrations literally jump off the page. In fact, the book’s strength is the illustrations!! The elves and wrapped gifts are beautiful, but the animals with big eyes and quizzical looks are wonderful to behold. The story is fantastical and magical and I believe it will appeal to ages up to eight or nine. Even if children these ages no longer believe in Santa, they should still love this colorful book.
One other note: I was somewhat put out by Santa’s solution for saving Christmas, but I’m much older than age eight or nine, so color me too old for this added fantasy. But despite this weakness, I would buy this book in a heartbeat because little ones will be delighted with the pictures and the storyline.
I give this book a rating of 4 stars.
I hope this review has been helpful to you. Later!
