Spilling ink has never been so much fun! Inkblot: Drip, Splat, and Squish Your Way to Creativity, by author/illustrator Margaret Peot, brings a refreshing new level of creativity to making an inky mess.
In Inkblot, Peot defines the messy MC (main character) as “a blob, smudge, drip or fleck of ink on a piece of paper.” Sound like fun? Next she explains how to spark your child’s creativity by folding and unfolding the blobs to make symmetrical images that fire the imagination and tickle the brain.
Inkblot promises a world of artistic fun (and a world of smudges, too…but that’s another story!). Peot teaches children young and old how to make inkblot variations, including everything from long, thin inkblots to single- and multi-fold inkblots. She helps aspiring artists add lines and colors to their inky messes, and even schools her readers on how to make specific shapes, like butterflies and spaceships.
Inkblot is bright, colorful and fun from the first page to the last. It’s also wonderfully organized, with each page offering a visual example of a specific type of inkblot, then listing what papers, inks and natural materials children (or adults) will need to make their own inkblots. In short, Peot deserves an A for preparation and organization!
I truly enjoyed this book. The writing is clear and precise, with just enough warmth to keep it from sounding too much like a textbook. The inkblots, signed, sealed and delivered by the talented Ms. Peot, are a picture lover’s dream. They burst with enough color and creativity to whisk you back to that time in your childhood when your imagination galloped like a runaway horse. I loved everything from the simple inkblots at the beginning to the more advanced sections where Peot explains how famous people like author Victor Hugo (Les Miserables) used inkblots for inspiration. There’s even a section on how ink-lovers can take their creativity to the next level.
If you want to add spice to your art lessons and boost imagination in the process, Inkblot, by Margaret Peot, is your best bet.
Best wishes and happy splatting!
